Live citrus psyllid found with HLB

In the San Gabriel yard adjacent to where an infected Kumquat tree with huanglongbing (HLB) was found recently, surveyors with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) have discovered live Asian citrus psyllids infected with the disease which is fatal for citrus.

The find of infected psyllids is the first in the state, confirmed Alyssa Houtby, director of public affairs for California Citrus Mutual.

“Hopefully, we can keep it confined to that area,” she said Friday, noting she did not know how many psyllids were found with the disease, also known as citrus greening. Surveyors also found a second tree infected with HLB, a Mexican lime tree, said Jay Van Ryan with CDFA.

The discovery of trees with the disease were the first in the state since a tree was found infected in 2012 in the Hacienda Heights area of San Gabriel. Houtby said that tree became infected when an infected tree was grafted onto a healthy tree. No infected psyllids were found and no more trees were found to be infected.
