Government Investigating White Spot Outbreak

20 October 2011

Maputo — Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Fisheries has told AIM that the Ministry does not yet have any clear indication about the case of White Spot Syndrome (WSS) detected in a prawn farm in the central province of Zambezia.

The outbreak has led the company Aquapesca to suspend indefinitely production of farmed prawns, leading to the loss of 80 jobs. This is a very severe blow – Aquapesca has been operating for 17 years in the Zambezia district of Inhassunge, on the banks of the Bons Sinais river, where it had developed 350 hectares of prawn farming ranks, five quality control and pathology laboratories and a prawn processing plant.
