Given my research background, I found this particularly interesting. It is only amatter of time before this sortof story becomes more and more prevalent, not just with insect pests but also fungal pathogens, viruses and phytoplasmas. The Australian banana industry, 90% of which is centred in a small area in north Queensland and 95% of which is comprised of one variety of banana (dwarf cavendish), is highly susceptible to climate-change induced changes in pest and disease phenology. Some of the threats are not as relatively benign as mealy bugs and scale as in the following story. For example, a mutation of Panama disease tropical race 4 has the potential to completely destroy the entire industry as nearly happened with the Gros Michel variety decades ago. It is only a matter of time before conditions are perfect and our border protection fails again.
