If you go out for a Boulder County craft brew after work, you might get a warning about emerald ash borer along with your hoppy beverage.
The county has distributed coasters to bars and pubs to warn people about emerald ash borer, a non-native beetle that is rapidly killing millions of ash trees in 21 states.
"WATCH YOUR ASH!" one side of the paper coaster cheekily advises people from under their glass. The other side encourages people to slow the spread of emerald ash borer by not taking hard wood out of Boulder County and removing affected ash trees.
Emerald ash borer has only been confirmed within in Colorado in the city of Boulder, according to the county's Emerald Ash Borer webpage.
Brett Stadsvold, the county's EAB coordinator, said Gabi Boerkircher, a communications specialist with the county, came up with the idea for the coasters during one of the monthly meetings the county employees have about emerald ash borer.
"We all thought it was a great idea. The goal is to try to reach a lot of the folks who may not be following traditional news outlets," Stadsvold said.
